Walter W. Johnson was born March 29,1892 in Greenville,Madison Co., Florida to the parents of Lemuel Richard "Dick" Johnson and Josephine Garner Porter. There was ten children in all. Walter married Sleetie Land daughter of Oliver C. Land and Sarah Margaret Fennell of Madison Co. Ga. They had eight children only three lived. Walter and Sleetie raised their twin nephews Leon and Loran Land, children of Walter's sister Betty Johnson and Sleetie's brother Oliver G. Land.
Walter work in the logging industry all his life. He often lived away from home because he had to go where the work was and it was not always good for the family to go. After he grew older he and Sleetie settled in Mystic Ga. where they lived until her death. There he held the job as night watcthman for a lumber company along with his dog Popeye. Popeye went everywhere with him. At home he raise pure bred bloodhounds and sold the to the state or anyone who wanted to buy one. Walter moved in with his daughter Pauline George in Jacksonville Florida after Sleetie's death.
Sleetie was born Feb. 27,1891 in Florida and was a good homemaker and you could say she raise her girls by herself. As Walter was working away from home most of the time. At one time she helped earn their living by keephouse for people. Sleetie had pluresy and could not walk at one stage in her life. The girls took care of her. I keep talking about the girls. They were her only living children. She and Walter had eight children; Ida, Pauline, Estelle, Annie Mae, Thelma & Walter W. Jr. (twins), Mary and Ruby. Now only Ida, Pauline and Annie Mae lived, the others died as very young children. Sleetie also raise her brother Oliver's twin babies, Leon and Loran Land as her own. Their mother died a couple of months after their birth.
These two families lived and farmed in and around Madison County Florida. The Johnson's in in Greenville and the Land's in Madison. The Johnson's came from South Carolina through Georgia and settled in Greenville around 1860 or 1870. I have very little information so far on the older Johnson's. The Lands came from Georgia out of Wilcox, Worth, Irwin counites and into Hamilton Co. Florida on to Madison County Florida.
This then is my mother's family. It is an on going search. So if you stop by and read alittle of what is here and see some comparison. Write me a note in the guest book and I will contact you. Yes! Thanks for stopping by. Hope I could help. Jeannette
